The Sand Silo

This subterranean tunnel and sand silo has been used to store sand for the icy Swedish winter roads. The silo has an opening on the top of a hill where sand was poured down during summer. In this way the sand never froze hard. In the winter trucks drove into the tunnel beneath the silo and filled up thier platforms. Then they could drive straight out and sprinkle sand on the ice-glazed roads. In the picture beneath you can see a heap of sand in the end of the tunnel. Above the sand-heap is the silo situated.
